Message: Jesus is like actually God

Bible verse: “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45)

The text to her friend read: ‘Chiselled abs - bronzed skin’. Everyone knows someone who fits this description, whether it’s Sonny Bill Williams, Arnold Schwarzenegger or Fabio.

And who can overlook these magnificent masterpieces of humanity! Shining with eye-catching glory, they’re god-like. Some of us want to be with them, some of us want to be like them.

But perhaps the ‘god-like’ for you are those with creativity or power!

But are those relationships genuine?

Steve Jobs had both and changed the world. Just a glance at all the iPhones on the train is enough to tell us all that. Maybe you’d like to be just a little bit like him?

But the reality is… we’re not like these ‘gods’. And even they fall short of their own divinity. So often their glory is, at best, skin deep.

The visionary Steve Jobs was, reportedly, a mean and petty boss. The great Rugby player, Sonny Bill Williams has been involved in all sorts of off-field behavior that’s dangerous and hurtful.

But we’re all like this. Thirsting for glory and perfection and occasionally catching a tiny glimpse, but in the end failing in all sorts of ways. It may be as friends or parents or workers. You know the details.

Is there any hope for us? Do we have any chance of reaching the perfection we long for?

There’s one man in history that brings hope. One man whom the evidence points to as being not only god-like but actually God.

Jesus.

We don’t know if Jesus had chiseled abs or a dazzling smile. But what we do know about Jesus is so much better.

Although Jesus made the world and everything in it and could rightly have left us to our own failures, He deliberately left his position of power and glory to live with us failed, human ‘gods’. He died in our place so we might be forgiven and, eventually, join the real God in all his glory.

Jesus explained it this way: “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

When we put our trust in Jesus, he gives us true glory: eternal life with him. That’s worth texting about.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for giving up your glory so we can have new life with you. Amen.
