Have you ever thought of yourself as a slave? Have you ever felt trapped? Maybe by an addiction, a mountain of debt, a relationship that’s gone wrong, or simply the pressures of everyday life. At times we can all feel stuck, powerless, or unable to break free.
Jesus said there is an even deeper kind of captivity that affects every one of us. Through both his words and his actions, he taught that humanity is enslaved by sin. Sin is more than just doing wrong things. It’s our tendency to turn away from God, ignore His authority, and live life our own way instead of the way He designed us to live.
God created us to love in the right order: God first, people second, and things third. But sin turns that upside down. We naturally put ourselves first, chase comfort, success, or approval next, and often leave God out altogether.
The problem is that when we look to things like money, achievement, relationships, power, or recognition to give us ultimate meaning and happiness, we’re left disappointed. No matter how much we get, it never seems to be enough. We keep craving more, yet never find lasting satisfaction.
This is why Jesus came. Jesus said:
“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Mark 10:45
A ransom is only needed when someone is being held captive and can’t free themselves. Jesus was saying that He came to rescue us from the captivity of sin. The Bible teaches that sin has a serious consequence. Because God is perfectly just, rebellion against Him brings death:
“For the wages of sin is death…” Romans 6:23
That means every one of us stands guilty before God and faces a penalty we cannot escape on our own.But Jesus was different. He is God and as a human he lived a perfect life and never sinned. He did not deserve death. Yet when He died on the cross, He willingly took our place. He bore the judgment that our sins deserved so that we could be forgiven.
In giving His life, Jesus paid the price we could never pay ourselves. Through His death and resurrection, He offers freedom from sin, forgiveness for the past, and a restored relationship with God.
The question is simple: Will you remain in captivity, or will you trust the One who came to set you free? Turn to Jesus. Admit your need of Him, trust in His saving work on the cross, and receive the freedom that only He can give.
PRAYERS
Lord Jesus, I know that I cannot free myself from sin. Thank you for dying in my place and paying the ransom for my freedom. Please forgive me, make me your own, and lead me in the freedom that only you can give. Amen.
